John’s story
John has been staying in a shelter for several years. He ended up there after losing his home. Recently, he has taken major steps towards recovery and independence.
Through the municipality, John was given the chance to take part in a programme focused on working on the water. It was a perfect fit for his passion for sailing and everything to do with boats. Throughout the programme, he showed that he was motivated, reliable and eager to learn.
After completing the programme, John was offered a trial placement at a marine construction company. Over the past few months, he has worked there with great dedication and made a strong impression. He enjoys the work so much that it doesn’t feel like work. He works long days, but always with pleasure. His colleagues are glad to have him and value his contribution. From 1 November, he will have an employment contract. The aim is to offer him a position for more than a year, and his employer has clearly stated that they intend to keep him on.
This was an important milestone on John’s path to independence. His perseverance and passion for the trade have helped him see a path towards a stable life. Soon, he was ready to take another step: John enrolled in a deckhand training course at NOVA College in IJmuiden. He cannot progress without this qualification. He is currently a deckhand, the lowest rank. Once he has registered through SAB in Rotterdam, he will become a junior deckhand. After completing all the assignments, he will be a fully qualified deckhand. His employer, PK Waterbouw, expects him to earn the qualification. He needed a laptop for the course, and Everyday Heroes provided one.
