Rubunn’s story

“My name is Rubunn. As the child of a farmer, I was used to working hard from an early age, seven days a week. I have been homeless for a while, but made sure I had 24 hours of work to do so I didn't end up on the street. At that time I had no contact with my family. I ran away, since it was impossible to be at home and it was unsafe. Luckily I was still alive.

After a severe burnout, I finally received a Wajong benefit and was able to rent a house. This was much better than being homeless. I had always struggled until then. I have also gone through my transition operations and now nothing can stand in the way of my life. My life finally begins. I feel reborn and close to myself. I've had my operations, now have a beard and a mustache and a real man's voice.

Life is too short and too beautiful to do nothing. That is why I am so happy with the opportunity to start training to become a security guard. I want to study really hard to pass this course. You can take it in all kinds of directions, such as becoming a forest ranger or personal security guard, and so on. I now have the opportunity and I grabbed it with both hands. I know it's difficult with dyslexia, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. Because I got my driver's license and my VCA in one go.

Thanks to the UWV, I can now follow this training and thanks to the Power Certificate from Triodos Bank, my travel costs are reimbursed. Because I'm going back to study, I'm no longer locked up in the house. I matter again. I'm no longer on the sidelines. I no longer have to look at what is and is not possible, because I don't have a penny. And yes, I have so many more wishes. For example, writing a book about my history with a writer. Going abroad to work and much more.

Now that I have finished my own process, my son is 18 and I have regained contact with my parents, it is my time. With my new job I can go on holiday for the first time, do something fun with my friends and visit my family again. Finally I can eat out instead of not eating for days and saving every penny. I'm going for it 200 percent and I want to achieve it. It would make me stronger and give me more self-esteem.”
